As the conversion from procollagen to collagen takes place a reaction occurs that replaces a hydroxyl group, OH, for a hydrogen atom, H. The proline residues are then converted to hydroxyproline and secure the chains in the triple helix of collagen. A reaction occurs transforming the lysine residue to hydroxylysine, linking the triple helices into the tissues. Vitamin C serves in inducing both these reactions.

l-carnitine is a compound made up of the amino acids lysine and methionine.
